A U.S. citizen can sponsor a child under the age of 21 who is unmarried (also known as a child of a U.S. citizen or child of US citizen). Where U.S. citizens sponsor young children are not limited by the number of annual visas, it means that the visa of the petition is effective immediately without waiting. The total time to complete the application is about 1 year.
It’s important to know that when sponsoring a child under the age of 21, the age of 21 is counted on the day of application, which means that if a U.S. citizen sponsors a child at the time he or she is 20 years and 11 months and 29 days old, he or she is still counted as a child even though he or she is over 21 when the date of the interview is over.
