U.S. Consulate Requires All Social Media Accounts to Be Set to “Public” – Important Warning for Visa Applicants

On June 22, 2026, the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City issued notices requiring many visa applicants to change all their social media accounts to Public mode.

Why is the U.S. Consulate Requesting This?

This is part of the enhanced security and verification process. consular officers need to review applicants’ social media activity to ensure consistency with the information provided in the visa application.

Failure to comply may result in a temporary refusal under INA Section 221(g).

How to Comply Correctly

    1. Facebook: Settings → Privacy → Who can see your future posts → Select Public.
    2. Instagram: Settings → Privacy → Switch to Public Account.
    3. TikTok, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, etc.: Change to Public mode.
    4. Keep accounts public for at least 30 days after submission.

Important Note: Do not delete old posts. Deleting content may raise red flags and lead to additional interviews or denial.
