PARENT SPONSORSHIP
STEPS TO SPONSOR A PARENT TO THE U.S.
- Apply for parental sponsorship to USCIS
U.S. citizens are allowed to file their parent petitions (IR5) with USCIS by filing an I-130 petition with a fee of $535.
- Notice No. 1 (NOA1)
About 2-3 weeks after filing your parent petition, you will receive Notice No. 1, informing immigration that you have received your application. You don’t need to do anything at this stage
- Notice No. 2 (NOA2)
Approximately 6-12 months after filing your parent petition, you will receive Notice No. 2, notifying USCIS of approval or denial or request additional documentation. If the application is approved, there is nothing you need to do at this stage. If you receive a notice requesting additional documents, you will need to return them to USCIS.
- National Visa Center (NVC)
Within 2-4 weeks of USCIS approval, the application will be forwarded to the national visa center, the NVC will send the application number and invoice number with instructions on the steps to take. You need to submit the required documents and fees to the NVC.
- NVC to Consulate
Within 6-8 weeks, after NVC reviews your documents in full, NVC will send a notice of completion and transfer the petition to the local consulate where your parents live.
- Interview invitation
Approximately 4-12 weeks from the time you receive your application letter, NVC will schedule an interview for your parent at the Consulate.
- Physical examination
The sponsored person must have a medical certificate. Applicants need to register for a schedule of examinations and vaccinations at the Clinic prescribed by the Consulate in the host country.
Paying for a green card sponsors a parent 8. Interview with the Consulate
The sponsored person must attend an interview with the Consulate. Applicants must remember to bring their passport and other required personal documents. The purpose of the interview is to verify the parent-child relationship, and to check if the documents are valid and eligible for immigration.
- Visa issuance
After the interview, the applicant will know if the visa is approved or not. If the consular officer withholds the passport, it means that the parent sponsorship file has been accepted. The visa will be issued on the passport and will be sent back to your parents in about 2 weeks.
- Green card payment
The green card fee sent to USCIS $220
- Coming to the U.S.
The visa is valid for 6 months (the duration of the visa will be the same as the term of the medical examination results of the sponsored person), so the sponsored person should arrange to buy air tickets to suit the expiration date on the visa. The guarantor does not need to be accompanied.
- Green card issuance
The green card will be issued within 120 days after the applicant enters the United States. From that moment on, the sponsored person has the legal right to work in the U.S. and they can enter and exit the U.S. once they have received a green card.
